Aging Support Intern
Gateway Area Development District (ADD) seeks a candidate for the position of Aging Support Intern to assist with various clerical/administrative items within Gateway ADD’s Human Services Department. The candidate shall be a talented college student or recent college graduate, who would combine part-time hours at Gateway ADD with their studies and/or other activities. The candidate may complete this internship for academic credit. Gateway ADD is willing to coordinate with the candidate and the post-secondary institution for necessary paperwork and reporting requests. The intern will work an average of 15 – 22.5 hours weekly. The number of hours can be adjusted accordingly to fulfill academic requirements. The intern would shadow case managers/service advisors that are in contact with clients assisting with their health, safety, and welfare needs.
The Aging Support Intern will assist with data entry, phone assessments for elderly and disabled individuals, provide community resources to callers, file and track paperwork, update the community resource directory, and complete general office-related tasks associated with the Area on Aging and Independent Living (AAAIL). These activities may include but are not limited to the following: answering and directing Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC)-related calls; assisting staff with the completion of phone assessments for elderly and disabled individuals; data entry; updating the community resource directory; copying, scanning, faxing, and mailings; and creating letters and other business-related documents. The intern will perform other duties as assigned, which may include other tasks and technical assistance needed to support the Human Services Department.
The internship position is part-time, unpaid, and temporary (three-month period). The position will provide a vast amount of experience to the intern, including how to work in an office setting, work with a team, and how to strengthen skills while building a strong resume. The ideal candidate will have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Candidates must be current students, recent graduates (within one calendar year), and/or have been accepted to enter an advanced degree program (within the next year). Most interns are at least seniors at the undergraduate level, though strongly qualified juniors (at the time of application) will be considered. Graduate students are also encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will possess: a strong work ethic, prioritization, and problem-solving skills; initiative, good attitude, and willingness to learn; exceptional written and verbal communication skills; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to handle assigned tasks efficiently and correctly; proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); customer service experience is a plus. Consequently, a strong sense of responsibility and the ability to work well with a team and/or with minimum supervision are strong assets.
